My dearest friend (a true Halloween fan) invited me to try sculpting tiny clay ghosts with him. We have a habit of collecting hobbies, but in reality, we mostly end up nattering and drinking coffee, and I didn’t really stick with it. While I moved on from the sculpting, I found myself stuck on the little ghost characters.

Combining the ghosts with lino printing (a successfully collected hobby) was also inspired by the same Halloween-loving friend. My first ghost—a cheeky little trick-or-treater—was meant to be a one-off gift for him and his partner in their new home. But I couldn’t stop. Each ghost turned into its own character with a story to tell—from messy bakers and cute little gardeners to fishing enthusiasts and fortune-tellers. I started doodling them constantly, imagining new hobbies and personalities, jotting down pun-filled ideas in the night when I couldn't sleep (thanks perimenopause...or caffiene). And of course, I leaned fully into the playful eye rolls from my husband every time I came up with another ghost-themed pun (he secretly loves them—and has even pitched a few himself).

<img src="https://images.teemill.com/turchi6c01bzz4pky3cixa9rtklbslllmy7axdcyhnbk0tuv.png.png?w=1140&project=mardy-sheep-294965&v=2" alt="Framed photograph of my original ghost 'trick or treat' lino print, made for my close friend. Then my kids asked for them too.
